Reunion 2023

St. Mary’s School Pune Alumni Association organised a fun filled reunion on 5th March after a hiatus of three years which was of course due to the Covid pandemic . Alumni across generations and across the country and some even from abroad rushed to the venue in their Sunday best.

The oldest alumni present Poonam Gulati (née Patricia Stiffle )who passed out in 1957 , was felicitated by our President, Veena Vora and cheered by all. At the same time ,the batch who received the prize for turning out in largest numbers was the youngest and most enthusiastic batch of 2022. They were applauded lustily by their seniors. The 1972 batch were represented by the three Golden Girls - Keerti, Jyoti and Mary- who set the floor on fire with a dance to Elvis Presley’s Jailhouse rock. Medha, Sulabha and Minnie of 1973, read out poems recounting nostalgic memories of school written by their classmates who were unable to attend. A quiz on the school’s history and trivia was won by the 1982 batch.

Sumptuous and delicious platters of food and great music of all decades set the mood for a fun filled afternoon, of dance and chatter. Laughter reached the rafters and time lines merged as young and old sharing one identity, that of our Alma Mater made it a memorable Reunion . Everyone had a great time catching up after a long gap. Kudos to the organisers, Rekha, Supriya, Kashmira, Ali, Daulat, Maria, Neelu ,Usha , Afshan ,Surekha and so many others , for ensuring that this event would have everyone asking for more.

Reunion 2020

Cinco at The Mills came alive in the afternoon of Sat 4th Jan 2020. From 11.30 the 'Hiiiii' of friends meeting after a long time reverberated across the hall which had been opened in the day time only for the SMS Reunion. The beat of the music ensured nobody remained seated for long, and the floor was crowded in no time. Once again the menu was lavish and the atmosphere, electrifying. The highlight was the special performance by the Batch of 2019 ,who set the ramp on fire wearing the exclusive collection created by the renowned designer duo Shruti and Mangaysh. The style and the choreography bore the stamp of excellence and perfection synonymous to St Mary's, as did the flawless organisation and execution of a grand Reunion.

Reunion 2019

We did not have a get-together in 2018. Let us call it a 'Recovery pause 'after all the exciting events starting from Aug 2015 to Jan 2017. By the end of 2018 though, we were getting enquiries for the next Reunion. When? Where?

We also felt that it was high time we had some action! So, 20th Jan 2019 saw us celebrating friendships and nostalgic memories in our House colours at Dario's Trattoria ,located at the Poona Club .DJ Sukhi kept everyone moving to the beat of retro music, breaking ice and age (not sound ) barriers. The mouthwaterig delights of the Italian counter were greatly appreciated. Another enjoyable event brought together girls and boys from far and near, to relive and revive days gone by. The organisation, impeccable as always, has become the hallmark of Alumni events.

Reunion 2017

After the most successful and glorious celebrations to mark our 150 years, we had an unforgettable Reunion lunch at the Sheraton, (erstwhile Le Meridien) on Sunday 22nd Jan 2017 . Everyone thoroughly enjoyed and many had a great time dancing to the live music which played almost non stop that afternoon. The weather was just right , the setting , perfect and everyone dressed to kill. A sumptuous spread , exciting return gifts and the usual lively St Mary's chatter and laughter set the right atmosphere for the Head Turner, a competition for eye- catching and innovative head gear held for the occasion. Having bonded with classmates and friends, everyone left with the promise of getting together again soon.

Maya Thadhani on the 2014 Reunion

The OGA reunion was held in the old school hall on Saturday, 13 December 2014, at 5 pm. The venue was shifted from the auditorium to the smaller hall because it had rained very heavily the previous day and more rain was expected that day... a pity because the seating arrangements and decorations had to be rearranged overnight.

Registration and the school tours were from 5-6 pm. We all converged to the hall at 6 pm, where Mahrukh Bharucha (1985) took over the proceedings as emcee. The evening started with the School Song and speeches by Sarla Kumar, VP OGA, the Principal, Sujata Mullic Kumar, and Linda Pundole, a member of the School Board. Tentative plans for the 150th year celebrations in 2016 were shared with the girls. The Principal said she would be happy if many old girls, especially those from abroad, attended. They had set the wheels in motion; suggestions were welcome.

The class of 1994 put up a video documentary of their school years - nostalgic and very well done indeed. Twenty-three of them were there to celebrate their 20th reunion!

Over 170 girls attended the event, more than we've had in the past. Other alumni present ranged from the forties to 2013! Many gathered around Miss Arthur, Phyllis D'Costa, Miss Hymes, Firoza Barucha and Candy Dugal, their old teachers. A ton of wonderful prizes were given to pass holders with lucky numbers. There was a lot of ' seeti bajaoing ' as the girls went up to get their prizes! Mahrukh had her witty remarks running thru the programme and she ended the evening with a vote of thanks.

With the show over, we all trooped into the canteen for refreshments. Bhel puri, pao bhaji, pizza, bhajias , gajar halwa and cake stalls looked inviting – there was plenty to eat along with tea, coffee and cold drinks.

I sat with the 1977 batch - 14 of them - and was pampered silly! When they discovered I was from the class of 1953, they were in a state of shock!

The dress code was white and blue, the School colours. What stunning outfits - we should have had a fashion show! It was a fun filled, rocking evening. Every one enjoyed themselves thoroughly. None of this would have been possible without the untiring efforts of the OGA Committee. Veena is still in USA, and I have just returned, so it's really the team of youngsters on the committee who actually did all the hard work to make the evening a grand success. Thank you, each and every one of you.

The Blue and White Nite in 2010

It was an evening to remember! Blue and white was the theme of our reunion in Pune on 17th December 2010 and from the décor to the dress code, it was a sea of different hues of our school colours.

The Blue and White Nite was open to spouses this year, and old boys, but it was the 'girls' who really lit up the night. The usual rousing rendition of the school song, led by Dilshad Khambatta Eames and Meher Aga Pudumjee, set the tone for the evening. While some had a great time catching up with former classmates and teachers, other took to the dance floor with enthusiasm. Sandy and her band 'High Society' added a lively note to the evening with a selection of music that we (at least the slightly older ones among us) all happily identified with!

There was wine and there was song. And there was a vast and tempting spread of food to complete the evening. The icing on the cake was provided by the cookies and chocolates provided by Cookie Czar and 'old girl' Bharati Malani respectively. As reunions go, this was indeed a memorable one!

Welcoming 2009

In a departure from the usual our reunion this year was held off the school premises, and from the enthusiastic feedback we received it was obviously a good move. Maruti Suzuki sponsored the gathering at the Poona Club on 10th January, and with wine flowing way before the sun set, spirits were very high indeed! We saw a larger turnout of younger girls this year and they looked on in bemusement as their older counterparts took to the dance floor with gusto. It was party time and the evening was a truly lively affair, with prizes ranging from shot glasses to gas stoves! The buffet was full of inviting goodies and as the girls wound down over coffee, the verdict was unanimous – we old girls rock!

Meeting Again in 2008

This year’s reunion on 5 January saw a much smaller group of old girls get together in the school hall over tea. It was a more relaxed setting, with time for more intimate interaction. As every year we sang the school song and four senior house songs with unbridled enthusiasm, proving that those singing lessons so long ago haven’t really failed us! The second issue of Vignettes was released and distributed to those present. (If you weren’t there you can download the issue from the home page.) It was great to exchange notes over sandwiches and cake, and we hope many more will join us at the next reunion.

Reunion in 2007

On 6 January 2007 we organised a reunion to coincide with the 140-year celebrations of SMS. After a beautiful service in the St. Mary’s church, we moved to the spectacularly lit school grounds for our own special celebration. Mrs. Matthew and a few old teachers were felicitated with commemorative mementos, and old girls got together to sing rousing renditions of their house songs. An audio visual on the history of the school brought back a rush of memories and there were few dry eyes at the end of it.
